A LOP is revenue neutral, whereas a revaluation involves a “raise” in the “value” of the currency. The removal of the large notes (remove the three zeros) does NOT affect the value of the currency. The RV (revaluation) which makes the small denoms have value ("about $1" per CBI statements) DOES INDEED raise the value of the currency. However, after the RV, those who have some of the large notes will benefit, because THOSE NOTES will also RAISE THEIR VALUE, only at the NEW value of $1 per dinar. The confusion for those who view this event as a LOP is that they have consistently misunderstood the meaning of "remove the three zeros". They think that the zeros are just LOPPED off, when in fact the CBI is quite clear that the "three zeros notes" will remain legal tender at least until mid 2014, AND that they will retain their value as legal tender. One could make the argument that it would be silly to add extra tax on goods that are out of the average Iraqi's reach in the first place, unless there was a plan to increase the wealth of the average Iraqi in the near future… but the tarrifs themselves have nothing to do with the value of the currency. BAGHDAD – Iraq's rapidly expanding oil production is likely to complicate OPEC's efforts to influence world prices as the country re-emerges as a major player after 20 years on the sidelines due to sanctions and strife.
For now, Iraq is backing Iran's push for OPEC to set lower production limits and keep prices high, but Baghdad's own ambitious plans for expansion could cause an overall production growth that might drive down prices. Analysts say Iraq's new clout is shifting the power balance in the 12-member Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and could force it to overhaul its intricate production quota system to accommodate Baghdad's greater output. Iraq recently reached production of 3 million barrels per day, a level not seen since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that ousted dictator Saddam Hussein. It is on track to become OPEC's second-largest producer in the coming year, surpassing Iran and trailing only Saudi Arabia. |

[~PETERSMA] Opinion for what it's worth: While I believe that we are very close to where we want to be with this RV, it seems to me that there are many who are setting themselves up yet again for disappointment. As I read the "It has to be done by/before…" I know there have been other 'deadlines'. As I read "this person is about to speak" I know that all speeches are not about the RV. I know that it is prudent to watch for 'indicators' but I can't help the feeling that there are some folks out here letting down their guard and priming up for potential disappointment. To these folks I say, forget the have to by's and VIP speeches and just know that you are here in the right place at the right time and when this is over you will have 'won the marathon'. Take time to enjoy your family and friends and don't forget to live while waiting for this event to conclude.

SMART CARD Payment Systems Launched In Iraq……………….6/14/2012 Johannesburg, South Africa-based Net1 UEPS Technologies has launched a smart card payment system in Iraq. Net1 has developed a platform for unbanked consumers called the Universal Electronic Payment System (UEPS). Consumers are issued with biometric UEPS smart cards, so that they can have welfare payments and other fund transfers loaded onto their cards. They can then use the cards for purchases at POS terminals, authenticating themselves either with a PIN or at a fingerprint reader.-

OANDA will halt trading this Sunday, June 17, from 6:00 AM EDT until approximately 3:00 PM EDT. I would like to further explain OANDA's reasoning for this action. First off, OANDA is the only forex provider that permits off-market, weekend trading. In truth, volumes during the weekend are much lower than typical trading days, but OANDA has made this available as a service for its clients rather than an opportunity to increase corporate revenues. The decision to halt trading is very much tied to the uncertainty in Europe and in particular, the Greek election. Given these events, there is the potential for extreme exchange rate volatility at a time when global currency markets are closed. |
